2015 Garden of Dreams Inspire Scholarship- Study Abroad
Garden of Dreams Inspire Scholarship recipient Nyuma, a sophomore at Baruch College, recently studied abroad in Florence, Italy and shared some thoughts on her experience as well as photos from her travels!
“Studying abroad had always been a desire of mine. I was finally given the opportunity to make that into a reality with the help of the Garden of Dreams Foundation. I traveled to Florence, Italy for three weeks where I attended the Lorenzo de’ Medici Institution and was enrolled in an Intercultural Communications course. This was my favorite course because it allowed me to put my knowledge to the test and make the most of my experience. The tools and skills I learned while abroad helped me immerse myself into Italian culture and learn as much as I could during my stay. Although I stayed in Florence during my trip, I was able to make day trips to Rome, Venice, and Lucca. It was incredible to witness and learn of the cultural differences. Overall, my experience abroad was something that I doubt I could ever recreate. The friendships I formed while abroad followed me back home. I enjoyed trying new foods, quietly exploring my surroundings and being able to live Italian culture instead of reading about it. Being in a classroom does not teach experience, that kind of education is received by going out into the world and embracing it head on. This incredible experience would not have been possible without support from the Garden of Dreams Foundation.”
