Foundation Unveils Refurbishments at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital
The Garden of Dreams Foundation unveiled its largest refurbishment project to date with a complete overhaul of the common spaces in the Children’s Diagnostic Radiology Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. The newly remodeled space represents Garden of Dreams’ largest contribution for any refurbishing project to date, with $175,000 donated to create a more comfortable, soothing, child- and family-friendly atmosphere for the 11,500 children who visit the center each year for everything from sports-related injuries to life threatening diseases.
The Garden of Dreams Foundation’s renovation of the space, which has not been refurbished in over 25 years, includes a breathtaking 130 foot mural by renowned artist, James Kimak. Kimak used intricate images to create what he calls “distraction therapy,” where children can explore the mural while they wait to be seen by doctors. The mural features New York Knicks All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony; New York Knicks legend John Starks; MSG Network analyst and Hall-of-Famer Walt “Clyde” Frazier; New York Rangers All-Star goalie and Garden of Dreams spokesperson Henrik Lundqvist; Rangers legends Mark Messier and Adam Graves; New York Liberty legend Kym Hampton and team mascot, Maddie; MSG Network’s Al Trautwig; legendary recording artist and Garden of Dreams board member, Darryl McDaniels of Run DMC; The Rockettes; as well as children from the Garden of Dreams Foundation. Additionally, the renovation incorporates new ceilings, lighting, wall protection, flooring, and fresh paint within the space.
For the past three years, NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital has been one of Garden of Dreams’ 22 partner organizations. Garden of Dreams works closely with the hospital to include its pediatric patients in the Foundation’s unique and unforgettable ongoing events and programs – often involving unprecedented access to Madison Square Garden celebrities, events, and venues.
“The Garden of Dreams is the most meaningful thing we do at The Madison Square Garden Company, and it has been an honor to have the NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital as one of our partners for the past three years,” said Hank Ratner, President and CEO, The Madison Square Garden Company and Chairman, Garden of Dreams. “Our goal with Garden of Dreams is to bring the magic of Madison Square Garden to the children who need it most and we are grateful for this opportunity to support the Hospital’s amazing work by creating an uplifting space that will both inspire and comfort the thousands of extraordinary children who visit the Center each year.”
"For more than three years, the Garden of Dreams has been working with us to help ease the fears and stress of our young patients and their families,” said Kevin Hammeran, senior vice president and chief operating officer of NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. “This gift for the Children's Diagnostic Radiology Center has made possible the enhancement of a physical space in a lively way that promotes healing and comfort. We are grateful to the Garden of Dreams for this wonderful gift, and for its ongoing activities to bring joy to our pediatric patients and their families.”
Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, Garden of Dreams hosted a celebration for patients and families in the hospital’s Wintergarden area.
